Community Service at Cengklik Reservoir: Utilizing Organic Waste for Fish Feed and Organic Fertilizer

Cengklik Reservoir, October 10, 2023 – Joglo Farm, in collaboration with Dr.sc.tech. Adhy Kurniawan, S.T, a lecturer from the Department of Civil Engineering, Vocational School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SV UGM), carried out a community service program aimed at managing organic waste in the reservoir area and utilizing water hyacinth as feed for Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggots.

This initiative offers a sustainable solution for organic waste management by engaging local residents. Every day, the trained community processes approximately 10-15 kg of organic waste sourced from nearby food stalls and local households around the Cengklik Reservoir. The waste is converted through BSF maggot bioconversion into high-value products such as animal feed and organic fertilizer. This effort not only helps reduce environmental waste but also promotes the empowerment of the local community.

The BSF maggots produced are used as feed for the fish cages in the Cengklik Reservoir, which house a population of up to 300,000 fish. By utilizing maggots as feed, the reservoir’s aquaculture ecosystem can be managed more efficiently and sustainably. Additionally, the organic fertilizer generated is utilized for gardens surrounding the reservoir and for agricultural land, contributing positively to soil fertility and area greening.

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to improving environmental quality while empowering communities through innovative and eco-friendly resource management. With these tangible steps, the Cengklik Reservoir is expected to become a model of successful waste management that benefits both aquatic ecosystems and the lives of the surrounding community.
